Unknown Carpets is a textile studio based in Rajasthan, India, working with a deeply artisanal and experimental philosophy. Their kilims reflect a fusion of ancient technique and contemporary sensibility. Each piece is handwoven, embodying the unknown, the natural, and the imperfectly beautiful.

These flat rugs have no pile or plush, and are constructed using the technique of interlacing warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads, forming a textile surface that presents itself as a “poetic expansion” of the material.

Each kilim is handwoven in Rajasthan by artisans who preserve techniques passed down through generations. The fibers—recycled wool and silk—are spun manually, providing visual richness and depth of color. The dyes come from natural ingredients such as indigo, pomegranate, night jasmine, roots, spices, and sea sand. The water is reused up to three times, reducing the environmental impact. The design is constructed from blocks of color, with the yarn taking center stage. The entire process reflects a true commitment to sustainability and minimal waste.
